Veritas Funding has joined with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a family in need. Volunteers from Veritas started construction in July, and they will continue to help build through November.
Habitat for Humanity works to break the cycle of poverty by providing affordable housing to families in need. The homes are built largely by volunteers and the families themselves. Families who are selected will pay a down payment, make monthly mortgage payments on a no-profit loan, and help with construction of the home. Habitat seeks to empower families, give them stability and foster pride by making home ownership a reality. Since 1986, they have helped over 350 people in the Salt Lake valley and have built almost 100 homes.
The house sponsored by Veritas will be built for Kinsella Orr and her family. Here is her story:
In my hometown, Mansfield, Ohio- the major factory which provided most jobs where we lived shut down. My mother wanted a better life for us, and since it was just me and her and she had a brother already out here, we moved clear from there to Salt Lake City, Utah just a week shy of my tenth birthday.
I’ve had troubles on the way while growing up. Being an only child and moving away from all that I knew was hard and even though I’m originally from Ohio- I feel as this is my home since I pretty much grew up here.
I became a really young mother. I was pregnant at 15, had my first daughter when I was just 16 years old. That was hard- losing my childhood and having to grow up too soon. But I really wouldn’t have it any other way. My daughter (who is now 22) is my best friend and helps me out sooo much with everything, especially her siblings. I don’t know what I would do without her.
I just think that kids who grow up in an actual house just have it better in life. They get to have a yard to play in or just sit in and relax, they are able to get to know the neighbor kids, and become part of a community making life-long friendships and they realize the value of taking care of and owning something that they can call their own. It is also something I have always wanted - a house for my kids to grow up in - something that I never had growing up, and something that I haven’t been able to afford on my own.
When I heard about the Habitat program through a friend, I thought that I would give it a shot. I applied in 2012 and was told that I needed to clean up my credit. I worked hard on it that year, and applied in 2013 and was approved. That feeling was a great feeling and satisfaction for myself and also for my kids. I have been working hard to get in my hours, learn and take in this program. I know that this is a great opportunity that has blessed my family and I want to show my kids and others out there that it can be done, it just takes dedication, determination and the will to succeed. I am happy to be a part of this program. I feel it is a great opportunity out there to help families that feel that they can’t do it on their own.
Veritas Funding is proud to partner with Habitat to help the Orr family build their house and build hope for their future. We strive to help families from all walks of life reach their goal of home ownership and find their dream home.
